Word of the Day: Mirth
Today’s word of the day, courtesy of the Dictionary Project, is mirth. Mirth is a noun that means “merriment, laughter, glee,” according to the project’s email. Dictionary.com provides “gaiety or jollity, especially when accompanied by laughter” or “amusement or laughter” (https://www.dictionary.com/browse/mirth). Happy definitions, those.
The word existed in “Old English myrgð ‘joy, pleasure, eternal bliss, salvation’ (original senses now obsolete), from Proto-Germanic *murgitha (source also of Middle Dutch merchte), noun of quality from *murgjo– (see merry; also see -th (2)). By early 13c. as ‘expressions or manifestations of happiness, rejoicing;’ by mid-14c. as ‘state or feeling of merriment, jollity, hilarity’” (https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=mirth).
I’ve had a long day with no chance to write. It’s kind of sad.
And now it’s late, and I’m too tired to write.
We just got back from visiting my 96-year-old mother-in-law.
So we’re watching Resident Alien, which is providing us a bit of mirth.
